Medium Leather French Link Mottled Blank Book

This is a medium, hand-crafted leather blank book, bound with a French link stitch and finished with a copper-toned snap closure and a flap that wraps around the book to help protect the pages inside. It uses unlined paper and lays flat—perfect for journaling or sketching, or even for use as a scrapbook or recipe book!

It has 160 pages (80 leaves) and measures approximately 4-1/2" wide, 5-3/4” tall, and about 1-1/4” deep at the spine. All of my books have my "Damselfly Books" stamp at the bottom of the last page.

Process

First I cut the cover out of a large roll of leather. This particular leather is rich, textured brown with a lovely wrinkly grain, a heavy weight, and a very stiff firmness, which makes for a very sturdy little book with a lush feel.

I created all of the signatures for the inside of the book from Mohawk Superfine 80-lb text paper (which is acid-free, archival, Forest Stewardship Council-certified, and made with wind power).

Next I sewed everything together using lightly waxed dark green Irish linen thread and a French link stitch that shows on the spine.

Finally, I finished the closure of the book with a copper-toned snap. As much as possible, I try to work with the leather as it is naturally, incorporating the beautiful natural edges from the tanning process as much as possible. I LOVE to use the funky edges, and this one had a great little curve to the edge that I worked in to the front flap for a very unique, rustic look.
